with Michalis Katachanas on viola, Thodoris Kotsifas on guitar, Kimonas Karoutzos on bass and Vassilis Podaras on drums
Michalis Katachanas began playing the violin at the age of 8. He studied at the Music Department of the Ionian University, where he discovered the viola and musical expression through jazz and improvisation. In 2008 he continued with postgraduate studies on a scholarship at the prestigious New England Conservatory, Boston, where he studied under Charlie Banakos and Ran Blake among others.
He has worked with many important names from the Greek and international arena and in the last four years he has appeared in Athens presenting his music with various groups either as leader or as a sideman.
With his quartet, he performs mostly original compositions by the members of the group, but also compositions of the wider jazz repertoire. As Michalis Katachanas says “our inspiration is the sound of modern European jazz combined with music from the Mediterranean and the Balkans. Our goal is to improvise, to create and to share with you good and original music, while forming a circle of aesthetics and creativity.“
